The G-Wagon was not designed to be a status symbol. It was designed for the Austrian military. It was designed for mud and mountain and conflict. Then something happened: the machine turned out to be indestructible, and indestructibility turned out to be the most aspirational quality possible.
The G63 AMG is what happens when you take that indestructibility and give it 577 horsepower and a twin-turbocharged V8 that sounds like civilization ending on your command. The body panels are still welded by hand in Graz. The ladderframe chassis is essentially unchanged since the 1970s. The doors close with a sound that other manufacturers try to replicate and fail.
It is simultaneously the most impractical and the most practical vehicle on the road. Impractical because it makes no aerodynamic sense, gets fuel economy that belongs in a different era, and parks like a small building. Practical because nothing on the road looks like it, nothing on the road makes the same sound, and nothing on the road makes the same statement when it appears.
